To What Extent Does Counselling Fall Under the Code of Rights?
For those aspects that are covered by the Code:
- What are the key elements of informed consent:
-
- What information is required to make it “informed”?
- How is age considered in assessing consent in different circumstances?
- How does age affect considerations of consent where the student is between 12 and 14? What about those under 12 years?
- What is the role of parents/guardians with these age groups?
- When is a “blanket” or generic consent adequate?
- Evaluating oral versus written and ‘implied’ consent
- Addressing challenges with consent:
o What are your obligations to the student where the parent does not consent to counselling, but you believe the student needs it and the student consents to counselling?
o What are your options where only one parent consents, but the other objects to counselling ?
o Exploring circumstances where it can be claimed consent was obtained because of undue pressure or duress
o Obtaining specific consent regarding mental health and other assessments of the student
- Best practice in documenting consent and template consent forms

An Introduction to Autistic-Centred Counselling
This workshop has been developed as a result of many years of working with people on the autism spectrum (including Asperger Syndrome) , their families and associated professionals. It addresses their struggle to find suitable counselling that empathises with the many traits of the autism spectrum that can present in confused meaning when it comes to making sense of their emotions, communications and social awareness.
The co-facilitators have observed how autistic client-centred counselling can resolve many stressors for the client, their family and often for the professionals. Sherine and Serena have been counselling austic people for over 20 years. They both have family members on the autism spectrum, giving them lived experience, knowledge and understanding into the issues and challenges experienced by autistic people and their families.
The focus of the workshop will be to provide understanding, strategies and techniques for professionals to have confidence supporting autistic clients and their families. Examples will be presented from both counselling case studies and stories from autistic clients to help professionals make sense of ‘everyday’ worlds through the eyes and minds of autistic clients regardless of their cognitive ability.
This training will be of particular interest to counsellors, therapists, and professionals who support people on the autism spectrum and their families.
Some of topics we will explore:
-
● Counselling principles and modification for counselling when working with autistic people.
-
● Anxiety and depression and other feelings
-
● Stuff that works and stuff that doesn’t
-
● Strategies and case studies
Workshop notes and a PD Certificate will be given at the end of the workshop.

Relationship Counselling Training with Brenda Rawlings
An opportunity to train with one of NZ’s leading counselling trainers
Brenda Rawlings has been journeying with brain cancer, GBM, over the last 21 months so she has not been available to offer trainings. However, Brenda is back!!
Brenda is an exceptional trainer with an outstanding reputation both in NZ and internationally. Brenda has been a Clinical Instructor on the Faculty of the Imago International Training Institute, based in USA, since 2002. She is now a Senior Clinical Instructor, was Dean of the Faculty, leading a team of 30 international trainers, 2012 – 2016, and recipient of the Harville Hendrix Award for Clinical Excellence, 2013. She is offering trainings again in 2021.
Brenda is understated but treasured by those who have had the opportunity to train with her. See below for quotes from those who have trained with her, spanning more than ten years.
Brenda was diagnosed with GBM in August 2019. This is one of the most aggressive of brain cancers, nicknamed the Terminator, because of it’s limited life expectancy. Brenda has engaged with the full range of conventional medical treatments, including two operations, radiation, chemotherapy, and other medications as well as a range of complementary therapies and approaches, including reviewing the whole way she has engaged with life itself. Brenda has defied the odds and there has been no evidence of disease for the last seven months. Even so, Brenda is aware that her lifetime may be limited, so she is determined to continue to teach, which she experiences as life-enhancing and one of her favourite things to do.
Brenda now brings the depth and wisdom gained from her cancer journey into her trainings.
Brenda, along with her husband, fellow Imago Clinical Instructor, Peter McMillan, have been specialising in relationship counselling for 25 years. They will be presenting the Fundamentals of Imago, on June 18/19, in Auckland. See https://www.relationships.co.nz/imago-institute-for-relationships/.
Later in the year, August and December, they will present Imago Clinical Skills 1 & 2, which can lead towards Certification as an Imago Relationship Therapist. See
<https://www.relationships.co.nz/training-programmes-in-new-zealand-dates-fe
here for more information about these trainings.
It is not known how many trainings Brenda will be able to facilitate into the future, so here now is an opportunity to train with this inspirational teacher.
