Thinking of training to be a counsellor and want to join NZAC?

General things you need to know:

There are several counselling training courses throughout NZ.

Different courses offer different modalities and theories.

The choice you make is a personal decision. You need to talk to the training provider yourself to get an idea if the framework they are offering fits for you.

Fundamental things you need to know:

There are different academic levels you can complete: Diploma, Degree, Post Grad Diploma, Masters

Names of the courses vary, for example:

  • Counselling
  • Psychotherapy
  • Social Practice – Counselling
  • Gestalt Psychotherapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Psychosynthesis - Counselling
  • Health Science – Psychotherapy
  • Applied Social Science – Counselling

Theory courses can be a first step in working towards training as a counsellor. Psychology courses are not recognised by NZAC as they are theory based. You may wish to look at the New Psychological Society if you have these Qualifications.
