Professional Development Day 2018

This one day of professional development will give members opportunities to continue to upskill and develop in this ever-changing world.

Opening Plenary Session – Facilitated by Sienna Hamilton-Katene

Sienna invites members into a conversation about our relationship as tangata whenua and tau-iwi.  Do we have a marriage? And is it an arranged marriage?  Before you arrive we will send some questions to participants to reflect on. In the session Sienna will invite discussion and responses in relation to those questions.


Confidentiality and Secrets– Facilitated by Sue Webb, Ethics Committee Convenor

In this workshop the issue of sharing information and maintaining confidences will.  Exercising professional judgment in relation to safety versus autonomy will be discussed, with this linking to the particular need to work cooperatively with other health professionals when clients are at serious risk

Peer and Whanau Support Groups and Peer Supervision Groups– Facilitated by Niccy Fraser, CPD and Audit Coordinator

In this workshop Niccy will discuss setting up peer and whanau support groups for PD and Setting up peer supervision.

Mindfulness– Facilitated by Christine Macfarlane, NZAC National Executive Member

This workshop will introduce people to Mindfulness as a way of exploring healthy mind habits for themselves and with clients.  Utilising free/low cost apps to support people to implement every day practice will also be explored.

Puawananga Kaitiakitanga– Facilitated by Gay Puketapu-Andrews, Te Ahi Kaa

The NZAC Maori Roopu have developed guidelines for undertaking Puawananga Kaitiakitanga (formerly known as cultural competence) in relation to counselling practice.  This workshop is an interactive session that uses Tihei Wa Mauriora and introduces the Let's Get Real modules

Risk Assessment:  Keeping up to date – Facilitated by Rachel Moriarty, Clinical Advisory Services Aotearoa

This workshop will help all to ensure that participants are well versed in suicide risk assessment and the appropriate course of conduct that they should undertake where risks are identified.

Supervision– Facilitated by Judy McCormack, Convenor Supervision Committee

This workshop will focus on completing our CPD.  What do we need to do to when we go to supervision with our CPD plans and ideas? How do our supervisors support us and what do our supervisors need to do in today's NZAC CPD environment? A workshop for members and their supervisors.


NZAC has an ongoing commitment to Tiririt o Waitangi.  The caucus is an opportunity for members to explore this within their relevant caucus group.  There will be a caucus for Tangata Whenua and one for all Tau Iwi.
